RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
